Top Five Carousels Around The World

Carousels, or merry-go-rounds, are timeless attractions that captivate visitors with their beauty, charm, and nostalgia. Here are the top five carousels around the world known for their unique designs, history, and cultural significance.

Jane’s Carousel

Built in 1922 by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company, this restored carousel features 48 intricately carved horses and two chariots. Set within a glass pavilion in Brooklyn Bridge Park, offering stunning views of the Manhattan skyline and Brooklyn Bridge.

Jane and David Walentas bought the Carousel at auction for full price in 1984. It was in poor shape. Jane Walentas, from her DUMBO studio, led the restoration. It required carpentry and manual scraping of layers of paint. The original colors of 1922 and the elegant wood carvings were revealed by scraping. Jane’s research, color matching paint and re-decorating of missing embellishments brought the carousel and horses back to their original beauty.

The Walentas’ commissioned the construction of a glass pavilion for the Carousel to ensure that it would be able to operate all year round. The transparent cube with retractable doors showcases the historic Carousel, while taking advantage of the spectacular location on the bluff that overlooks the East River and Lower Manhattan skyline, as well as the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges. The carousel was designed by Jean Nouvel Ateliers. This internationally renowned architect and designer is responsible for the design.

The carousel is still running now and the ticket is 3 dollars. If interested, you can go a try.

 Le Carrousel de Lancelot

Le Carrousel de Lancelot is a traditional family carousel attraction in the Fantasyland section of Disneyland Park in Disneyland Paris. The ride features organ music from various Disney films. A grand carousel inspired by King Arthur’s legends, featuring beautifully detailed medieval-themed horses and carriages. Located in Fantasyland, it immerses riders in a fairytale experience with dramatic music and storytelling elements.

The organ is used to play songs from Disney films such as Beauty and the Beast and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Seating options include traditional carrousel-shaped seats as well as two-person benches carriage seats. The ride includes 16 horses, each sculpted in intricately detailed armor. There are also 70 horses in the interior rings, which are arranged in order according to the colors of a rainbow. This is the second-largest carrousel in the Disney Parks. The Excalibur sword is located in the Castle Courtyard, near the Fantasyland Carrousel.

Under this magnificent big tent, whose floors and structures were made in Europe, eighty-six horses (with five spares) and two chariots patiently awaited their riders. Each horse was unique and considered one of a kind. Each had different clothing and armor. The sixteen horses in armor placed outside were the only ones with bodies made of American basswood and legs made of poplar (a much stronger wood), if not all of them were made of wood, as in the old carousel; all of them were adorned with twenty-four carats of gold leaf, and the other seventy horses were treated with the same treatment.

 Grand Carousel

William H. Dentzel built the Grand Carousel (also known as Merry-Go-Round) in 1926 to celebrate Philadelphia’s sesquicentennial. It was finished too late to be installed for the sesquicentennial and instead, in 1927, it went to Kennywood Amusement Park in West Mifflin Pennsylvania. Grand Carousel was designated a Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation Historic Landmark. It is Kennywood’s largest carousel and the park’s third carousel.

A 1916 Wurlitzer military band organ is used to provide the music for the carousel. This is one of the oldest Wurlitzers #153s still in existence. The carousel is four-abreast, which means that there are four rows of animals and it moves in an anti-clockwise manner. The ride is decorated with over 1,500 lights. Two notable non-equine creatures that are featured on this ride include a tiger, and a Lion. This carousel is a Menagerie Carousel because it features two non-equine species. This is one of three rides in Kennywood that has a bell to start and stop the ride.

 Santa Monica Pier Carousel

Santa Monica Pier Carousel is a favorite family entertainment destination that has been around for over 100 years. The rare opportunity to ride on one of the original merry go-rounds from the golden era of seaside entertainment is a favorite among guests.  The Santa Monica Pier Carousel, originally built by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company – known for its intricately detailed carousels – is a sight to behold. The structure includes 44 hand-carved horses, 2 sleighs,s and 1 rabbit. 1100 lights light it. The festive band music transports riders to another era. The carousel offers an ADA accessible chariot, which includes a wheelchair ramp.

The carousel is a great way to entertain guests at a reasonable price. Some guests love the carousel, and rent it for luncheons, birthday parties, or photo shoots. The merry-go-round rental includes tables, chairs, wristbands, and assistance with cleaning up and loading riders.
